Learning Outcomes

Introduction to Cognitive Robotics

Organismoid Embodiment

Smart Materials

Lesson Summary

In this Module, you will be introduced to Cognitive Robotics and the basic building blocks needed to build a "thinking" robot.

The Human Nervous System

The Human Brain

The Brain's Hidden Elements

Nerve Cells

If you have to develop a cognitive robot, you have to understand the cognitive architecture of the brain itself. This Module will explore deep inside the brain, how it is structured and the function of each area of the brain.

Diploma in the Foundations of Cognitive Robotics - First Assessment

This assessment enables you to review your learning so you can determine your knowledge and understanding of Modules 1 to 2 of the following course:

• Diploma in the Foundations of Cognitive Robotics

The Hodgkin and Huxley Theorem

Developing New Models

Electroencephalography (EEG)

This Module discusses a few mathematical models that explain how a neuron action potential, or the neuron's firing of electrical signals, works within the neural network.

Psychological Theories of Intelligence

Theories of Artificial Intelligence

The Kuramoto Model

Child Robot Interaction

This Module discusses different approaches to the concept of intelligence, both from a psychological point of view and from a computer programmer's point of view. It also discusses how to create an artificial cognitive network that mimics the neural networks found in nature.

Diploma in the Foundations of Cognitive Robotics - Second Assement

This assessment enables you to review your learning so you can determine your knowledge and understanding of Modules 3 to 4 of the following course:

• Diploma in the Foundations of Cognitive Robotics

Diploma in the Foundations of Cognitive Robotics – Course Assessment

In this free online course, learn what you need to develop a 'thinking' robot with its own artificial neural network.

Diploma in the Foundations of Cognitive Robotics

At the beginning of robotics, industrial robots were used to aid in mass production. Then they were engineered to perform tasks requiring either high precision or high force transmission. Today, a new kind of robot is emerging: one that does not need to meet the demand for high precision or high power but for the understanding of the human mind and our needs.

Haptics

Haptic Devices and Interfaces

In this module, you will learn about haptics. This module covers touch, or more generally, the somatosensory system. This includes physiology, perception and engineering technology that stimulates the somatosensory system. You will be taught tactile receptor types, sensitivity threshold of mechanoreceptors and the kinesthetic system. Furthermore, you will be shown various haptic devices that enable manual interaction with virtual environments and how the haptic feedback technology works.

Audio

This module will cover audio for VR. You will be taught the physics of sound in terms of waves, propagation and frequency analysis. Furthermore, you will be shown the parts of the human ear and their function. After this, learners will gain an understanding of the concept of auditory perception. You will learn about auditory rendering, which can produce sounds synthetically from models or reproduce captured sounds.

Interfaces

Manipulation and Locomotion

In this module, you will be introduced to interfaces for VR and the evaluation of VR systems. You will be shown examples of perceptual training and how you can carry out an experimental design to achieve realism. You will be further introduced to general motor learning and control concepts. You will be taught manipulation and locomotion and ways in which users may interact with other objects in the virtual world.

Sensory Virtual Reality - Course Assessment

Explore new worlds as we explain how sensory experiences are designed for virtual reality in this free online course.

Diploma in Sensory Virtual Reality

This free online course delves into sensory experiences in virtual reality (VR). We show you how audio signals can be manipulated to mimic acoustic behavior encountered in the real world and how the sense of touch can be engaged to enhance the experience of interacting with onscreen interfaces. We also introduce you to VR interfaces, the evaluation of VR systems and experimental designs that can create an immersive sense of realism.
